3 DO’S AND 3 DON’TS FOR THIS FESTIVAL SEASON

DO

AVOID ANYONE DESCRIBED AS A ‘CHARACTER’ – They tend to arrive on the first day already blitzed half way to Venus. They speak solely in the drawling nonsensicalness of an insurmountably pickled halfwit and will be the reason your group is asked to leave several of the better tents. They will also, almost certainly, piss themselves at one point. Ditc…h them ASAP.

CHARGE YOUR PHONE – One of the least enjoyable things about festivals is trying to meet up with people. Meeting points are always either stupidly vague, ‘meet us at the left of the main stage’, ridiculously detailed ‘we’re by the guy with green hair’ or just foolish, ‘we’ll be under the helicopter’. Try to make this experience as unchallenging as possible by always having battery on your phone.

BRING LOTS OF DOLLAR – The only thing more expensive than festivals is financing a small war, so make sure you have the corresponding cash. Think a tenner a day will fulfill your needs? Think again. By the time you’ve had four £4.50 drinks, it’s only an hour and a half into the festival, the music hasn’t started yet and you’ve not even thought about food.

DON’T

BRING A GUITAR – After a few beers we all get that surge of confidence, and if there’s a guitar nearby then there’s only one way it will end. But try to remember: it will be much more fun for you than for everyone else, your playing will be shit because you’re pissed, everyone else’s previously enjoyable conversations will be interrupted, and no-one but no-one likes a show off. Don’t be ‘that’ guy.

ARRIVE AT NIGHT – You’ll end up next to a portaloo with you’re tent halfway up a tree in the morning.

SMUGGLE THINGS IN TAPED TO YOUR PERSON – Whether it’s small packages of nefarious substances ensconced among the genitals or bags of wine wrapped around the torso like jiggly Kevlar armor, when it comes to removing the contraband from yourself you’ll realize that you’re actually a complete idiot.

Benicassim for Beginners

A selection of our nearest and dearest from the coach

As a young person growing up in Britain, or almost anywhere else for that matter, there is one season that causes all others to pale into insignificance: Summer. Unfortunately for us, our sandy beaches are few and far between and you are more likely to sight a mermaid basking off the coast of Cornwall on a devastatingly cold and wet July afternoon than any variety of bathing beauty. This harsh reality has inadvertently lead to a revolution for the young, party hungry youth of Britain, realized in casting off the shackles of the gloom and doom of Old Blighty to pay an annual pilgrimage to the most sacred of all places: the European music festival.
As I had never been abroad to a music festival, opting usually to visit Leeds or Reading festival due to the logistic convenience I was unsure as to which festival to choose. My more seasoned friends assured me that for a first time traveler there was little choice in the matter, as in order to earn your wings in the festival scene, Benicassim is a must. Where else can you enjoy an eclectic mix of the biggest bands that the planet has to offer twinned with a friendly atmosphere and an immaculately blue sky at all times of the day?
As a first year student my initial worries were financial, as what with air travel, transfers, camping and insurance to think about before I even purchased my ticket it seemed to be a hugely costly procedure. Luckily I discovered a cost effective and easy solution through the services of a business named Music Festival Holidays, who organize every aspect of the trip for you at an incredibly affordable price. My only reservation was that their method of transport to and from the festival was by coach, but as I subsequently discovered, what better way to meet 50 new friends who all share similar interests and attitudes before the festival had even begun.
Each day that I spent at the festival seemed to trump the last. We arrived at midday on Thursday ready to see the Streets, perhaps one of Britain’s most groundbreaking urban acts, play their penultimate gig and it is safe to say that they did themselves proud. The atmosphere in the arena was jovial to say the least. I felt as if I was a part of a free thinking, expressive mob joined together by a passion of music and hedonism.
The next night embodied the reason that I had ventured to Benicassim, to witness a display of pure musical prowess in the form of The Strokes, a band who I believe to be the closing thing to the Beatles that we as a generation have been privileged enough to observe. I cannot express the feeling of pure bliss that I experienced whilst listening to Julian Casablancas serenade a stunned crowd, all I can say is that if you were lucky enough to be there you will understand.
Saturday night offered an all encompassing mix of genres, ranging from the youthful indie sounds of Bombay Bicycle Club to the seasoned spectacle that was headliner Primal Scream. Both truly played out of their skins, with spectacular visuals to boot and yet again I was at a loss to decide which night I had enjoyed the most.
The final day of Benicassim lacked the usual ‘last day feeling’ of a festival, as the hangovers accumulate and tempers flare as cabin fever sets in having spent a long weekend living in what is essentially a large plastic cage. These kinds of gripes have no place in the Spanish vocabulary or attitude, so despite the fact that we were all upset about having to pack up and leave in the morning, the fiesta continued! We embraced the fact that this special time was coming to an end in the only way that we saw fit, by partying from dusk until dawn. Believe it or not after 4 days of the most intense dancing, drinking and socializing that is humanly possible I welcomed my accommodating seat on our coach and braced myself for the journey home. Unfortunately for my bank manager this trip has not appeased my lust for exploration, in fact it has stimulated it. Next year I intend not only to repeat my trip to Benicassim, but also to visit the sandy shores of Croatia for Hideout festival and Outlook festival.

Music Festival Holidays 2012

Music Festival Holidays No Comments

After an amazing summer of European festivals it’s back to the grindstone for the staff at Music Festival Holidays, pulling together more festival packages for 2012.  The festivals we offered in 2011 are again on offer for 2012 – Hideout, Benicassim and Outlook.  We’ve also added Melt, Splash, Sonar and Berlin to the mix giving you plenty to choose from!

The party buses we ran in 2011 proved to be a real hit, breaking up the trek across Europe on both legs of the journey.  We partied in Munich, Paris and Clermont Ferrand.  Hideout, Benicassim and Outlook will follow the same itinerary as 2011 with party bus options available for all three festivals.  For those of you wishing to spend a little less you could choose to take the direct bus to both Hideout and Outlook.  Great value for money but be warned it’s a bit of an endurance test getting there!

New for 2012 we have party buses running to Melt and Sonar with overnight stops in Amsterdam and Paris respectively.  We’re also running direct coaches to Melt, Splash and Berlin.

Places for all the festivals are now on sale, phone us on 01829 781860 for more information and to make a booking or book online at www.musicfestivalholidays.co.uk.

So there you have it – Music Festival Holiday’s offerings for 2012.  We’re sure you are now spoilt for choice!  It’s worth mentioning too that Vimto soft drinks are supporting us next year and the organiser of the biggest group booking made for any 2012 festival will win a year’s supply of Sunkist!

Christmas is only just around the corner so it might be an ideal opportunity to sweet talk a loved one and drop big hints about which European music festival you’d REALLY like to go to next year.  We can provide vouchers!

Exit Festival Tickets

Exit Festival No Comments

Exit festival is easily the biggest thing to have come out of Serbia since the glimmering career of actress/model/pop star Bojana Novakovic, but if that doesn’t reel you in already then read on.
Exit festival combines a heady mix of quite probably the worlds best musicians and a wholesome social message. Located in the Petrovaradin fortress of Novi Sad, Serbia, Exit provides stunning line ups, which this year includes Deadmau5, Arcade Fire, Fedde Le Grande and Magnetic man, combined with stunning landscapes and an authentic European feel. As the winner of the prestigious best festival in Europe award last year it is certain not to disappoint, but if that isn’t enough persuasion then allow me to tickle your fancy futher. Exit allows you to cast off the sun starved shackles of your usual British festival, in which wellies are a must and shorts are a death wish, as in the Serbian Summer months the words cloud and mud are near blasphemous. The relaxed atmosphere and friendly vibe of this award winning music festival keep veteran punters coming back for more year upon year and I’m certain that if you have the wisdom and insight to give it a go you will be amoung them for the forseeable future.

Melt Festival 2011

Melt Festival No Comments

Germany’s Melt festival has been a favorite annual getaway for Techno enthusiasts since its birth in 1997 due to Germany’s consistent dedication to the Techno music scene. Since then the festival has developed slightly to suit changing tastes, but the original electronica essence of the festival lives on strongly in the hearts and in the minds of the organizers.

The scheduled stop off for this trip is definitely going to be an incentive to embark on this holiday regardless of the music festival, as we’re treating you to the capital of Holland, Amsterdam. We release you on the Dutch streets for one night, during which you can fulfill which ever passions and curiosities you may have. Amsterdam is unique in both its laws and its culture, so whether sight seeing and star gazing in the numerous delightful parks and museums that are on offer tickles your fancy, or like myself you will be drawn in by the coffee shops and red light district for some after hours entertainment, the world is your oyster!

We leave to Melt the following morning (providing that you can be dragged out of this enchanting city) to enjoy a long weekend of the best music and partying that the continent has to offer. After the festival we allow you one more opportunity to gorge your hedonistic desires in Amsterdam, but the following morning it is time to pack our bags for the final leg of our journey and to catch the ferry back to England, home sweet home. Book your seat with Music Festival Holidays and join the party!
